Experience the Hope Movement
Know the Social Enterprise Business Model
In 2008 it is said that there was an economic glitch resulting in the closures of nearly 500 non-profit organizations. However, Nic Frances in his book The End of Charity: Time for Social Enterprise says that this was not a glitch, it was instead a major shift and nonprofits would never be the same.
Mr. Frances said, “If fundamental and lasting change is to occur in the areas traditionally occupied by charities, it will have to be done within the structure and dynamics of markets.” I believe packaging the solution to a particular problem as a product or a service and then offering it to consumers is the most efficient way to effect change.”
And from an article in Inc. Magazine entitled Start a Company. Change the World:
“A 501(c)(3) nonprofit can still generate earned income. And plenty do. The National Center for Charitable Statistics estimates that nearly 70 percent of the $1.4 trillion generated by nonprofits in 2008 came from the sale of goods and services.” The article referenced the Girl Scouts annual sales of cookies—$750 million.
