Hi, this is Tony McWilliams and I’m here with my daughter.
Hi, I’m Lindey Duckworth and I’m here with my dad.
There is a reach, a desire to reach, a mission, a sense of mission that says, hey, I want to go do something with my life. And social business is one of the ways to get that done.
Yeah. Who is doing it really well? I mean, we’ve already talked about Tom’s and Warby Parker, but you have friends that have started, well, they’ve started several companies and there is a purpose to this conversation because I believe we’re bringing awareness not just to social business. We want people, we would encourage people to put their dollar where it matters. But there’s a purpose in this too because of the life-changing conversations we’ve had with our friends and your friends that have, you’ve been friends for a long time and these stories and this kind of business will become a standard and we will start to see a lot of this happen.
And so we’re talking about a company here. Yes, but you know what, I want to back up a minute. You talked about your dollar. We’re not talking about the dollar you give on a charity basis. There’s limited dollars in the charity donor model. That’s true. So when you say dollar, we’re not talking about the dollar in that model. We’re talking about the dollar in the marketing model, specifically in doing business. And we call it social business because it does have a sense of mission to it.
I’ve always followed the businesses of Sam Caster. He’s a friend of mine. He and his wife actually came to the marriage and family class that your mom and I used to teach. It was 2008, 2009, and 2010.
Oh, that’s right. And we had Sam and Linda Caster come and teach a session in this marriage and family class because they have five adopted children. So we wanted them to come in and talk about…
Oh, so they didn’t come and talk about business? No, they didn’t. They mentioned it along the way, but that’s just because it’s a part of their life. But the reason they were there was to talk about adoption and all the dynamics of family that relate to adoption.
Yeah. Wow. They really are a beautiful couple.
Okay, so you met them in 08, 09. Right. And what struck you about them?
What struck me about them was not just their dedication to adopting that many children. I mean, I don’t know what the average amount of children that adoptive parents adopt, but I thought five was quite a bit to be committed to, two of which had international origin for them. But probably one of the things, I just started paying attention to what Sam had to say because he wasn’t just a great adoptive father. He was a great businessman, but he brought things to market that were disruptive, that were revolutionary. He was, in that regard, a genius.
And I’m going to be revealing my age here just a little bit.
Go for it. Because there was a commercial on TV. I think the last time this commercial was on TV was 1979. Now, that would be before you were born.
